What 15+ Years in Mental Health Taught Me About Where Healing Really Happens
Updated: Aug 3

After more than fifteen years working across healthcare, mental health, recovery support, and community care, I noticed something that changed the way I think about wellness forever: healing doesn't only happen inside appointments.
When people hear that I've spent more than fifteen years working in mental health, they often assume I've learned the most from the appointments.
The assessments.
The treatment plans.
The crisis interventions.
The difficult conversations.
And while those moments absolutely shaped me, they aren't what changed the way I think about healing.
What changed me was seeing what happened after people walked out the door.
I watched clients leave appointments feeling hopeful. I watched people gain insight into the patterns they wanted to change. I watched breakthrough moments happen every single day.
But I also knew that the real test wasn't what happened during the hour we spent together.
It was what happened afterward.
What happened when they returned home.
When stress showed up again.
When the difficult conversation couldn't be avoided.
When anxiety returned.
When work became overwhelming.
When they had to remember the coping skill without someone sitting beside them.
That's where healing continued. Or where it became difficult to sustain.
Over the years, I realized something that has shaped every part of my work today.
People rarely need more information. In the information age, there is plenty of it, even at our fingertips.
What people need are more opportunities to practice what they're learning.
They need reminders.
Reflection.
Encouragement.
Support that shows up in everyday life - not just during appointments.
That's why I've never believed healing belongs exclusively inside a therapy office.
It happens while someone journals after a hard day.
It happens when an employee takes five intentional minutes to regulate before a stressful meeting.
It happens when a therapist gives a client a tool they can return to between sessions.
It happens when a workplace creates an environment where people feel safe enough to ask for support before they reach a breaking point.
Healing happens in the ordinary moments. The quiet moments. The moments no one else sees.
That realization changed the way I create everything.
It changed how I think about therapeutic journals.
It changed how I approach wellness education.
It changed why I developed the P.E.A.C.E. Portal™.
Because I stopped asking,
"How can I help people during the moment?"
And started asking,
"How can I help people stay connected to the work after the moment has passed?"
That's the thread connecting everything I do.
Whether I'm supporting an individual learning to care for themselves differently...
Partnering with a clinician looking for ways to extend care beyond the session...
Or helping an organization create a workplace where employee well-being is consistently supported...
The goal remains the same.
To create practical tools, meaningful conversations, and supportive environments that help people carry wellness into everyday life.
Because healing doesn't only happen inside appointments.
In many ways...
That's just where it begins.
